Inspiration for a Fresh New Look

With glorious colours all around, and Christmas just around the corner, Fall is the perfect time to start the design and decorating process. Tammy Irwin, Principal Designer and owner of Designing Durham has a few tips that may inspire you to get started.

Never underestimate the power of paint!. Paint can totally transform a room, and often on a very limited budget.”

The best way to add your personality to a room is to place your treasures in it . Objects should not only be aesthetically pleasing, but tell your story as well. Most rooms look better when they are ‘collected,’ not matched. When accessorizing a room, it’s important to begin with a blank slate. Clear off surfaces and begin by assessing the room without visual clutter.  Add in some colour and personality, one piece at a time.

As a reminder to you,  bookshelves don’t have to include just books – get creative! Add accessories in odd numbers – including the number one – and in varying heights and shapes for extra interest.

To enhance a bathroom, you can’t go wrong with big white fluffy towels and, for living areas, toss cushions rock!  Adding in cushions is an easy way to add warmth and colour to any space. Go big!

Being a designer is more than just a fun career! While shopping for fabrics, furniture and accessories is fun, there is a lot of work that goes on behind-the-scenes. With deadlines to meet and final details to be ironed out, a typical day could include hauling furniture, painting nail holes, hanging pictures and tackling chores more often associated with a construction crew. When a job is complete and the customer is thrilled, it makes all the hard work totally worth it.
